EPL Best Ball Rankings + Strategy

Welcome to our first edition of EPL Best Ball rankings! We’re super excited about this flagship Underdog contest for a few reasons. First, we don’t think it will fill, and who doesn’t love overlay?! Second and more importantly, there isn’t much info out there on this, so people are drafting so badly. We worked really hard to make sure you get the best rankings available, while most of the field is just clicking based on ADP. And because they’re doing that, they aren’t letting the ADPs freefall on some guys that aren’t even going to play in the EPL this season. Part of the bad drafting is Underdog’s fault, as they’ve failed to update the teams for so many players, making it hard for a casual drafter to even stack correctly. If you take Carl Rushworth, listed as the BHA goalie, you won’t benefit from pairing him with BHA defenders, because he’s actually the starting goalie for Coventry City.

This is why we’ve added notes to the rankings. We can’t change the team abbreviations in the Underdog app, so if you’re really serious about maximizing the edge, you’ll have to really study the notes. The most important thing is the players on different teams, as it’ll be pretty unique to correctly stack those players with their actual teammates. We think it’s pretty safe to assume many drafters won’t be aware of these Underdog errors, or at least not on top of it enough to successfully remember which guys need to be stacked with different teams than they’re listed with. The guys this applies to are listed below for your convenience with the teams they are now on:

Bruno Guimaraes – Arsenal MD
James Trafford – Leeds United GK
Carl Rushworth – Coventry City GK
Alejandro Garnacho – Aston Villa FW
Konstantinos Tzolakis – Hull City GK
Maxence Lacroix – Chelsea D
Gustavo Hamer – Coventry City MD
Danny Welbeck- Chelsea FW

When it comes to building the team, stacks are pretty important. To really master this format, you’ll want two types of stacks on each team: Goalie/Defense and Midfield/Forward. If you fail to execute one type of stack it’s ok, but the ideal team will have both.

The goalie/defense stack is about the clean sheet bonus. If the team pitches a shutout, you’re getting clean sheet bonuses for your GK and D which helps your lineup achieve ceiling scores all around. To win the final round and take home the top prize, it seems likely you’ll need a stack that records a shutout win just about every week. Our preferred build would be 2 GK and 1 or 2 defenders paired with each one. Prioritize stacking D and GK especially if you grab one of the goalies for the teams expected to compete for the title (Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea), as they are more likely to rack up the clean sheet bonuses. The situation where a goalie can be optimal but you don’t need a stack is if their team gets dominated, but they rack up saves. We saw this in the World Cup Final, where you needed a Spain stack with the Argentina goalie to win, because he racked up so many saves. If drafting some of the lower ranked starting goalies, you can assume they play for lesser teams, and their upside lies more in racking up saves than pitching shutouts, but the upside is there nonetheless. The last expected starting goalie is Konstantin Tzolakis with an ADP of 116 currently, so make sure to grab at least 2 by then. Our ranks are aggressive on starting goalies because if you don’t get 2 by the 10th round, you could be screwed. Some lobbies have multiple people taking 3 pretty early on, which means someone will be getting screwed in this game of musical chairs with just 20 starting goalies and 10 teams trying to get 2-3 of them.

Moving to the attacking stack, this is more straightforward. Midfielders often feed passes to Forwards and vice versa, so the hope is that you pick up goals and assists at the same time. When a team is racking up goals, having a full stack of their forwards and midfielders could give you some huge scores. It’s not essential that you stack since any individual player could score a goal and provide you with a usable score, but for the most upside we think you’ll want to.

The optimal builds seem to be 5-5-5-3, 6-5-5-2, and 5-5-6-2. The balanced 5-5-5-3 build will give you a solid floor at each position without sacrificing too much upside. Having a 3rd goalie from a lesser team will potentially provide a ceiling week multiple times during the year when they rack up saves, while having the stable floor of 2 reliable goalies. With this build, make sure you only do it with 3 starters. Never waste a pick on a 3rd goalie that will not see the field barring injury or the starter getting benched. That’s way too thin of a path to success. Midfield has the most depth of the positions along with the most consistent minutes, so sticking with 5 there will allow you to take an extra defender or FW, which have more variance. Occasionally you can take 6 if you’re getting excellent values from guys falling to you, as the 2 flex spots allow you to have 6 of any position, but Midfield is our least favorite to add that depth. The 6-5-5-2 build may be our favorite option since forwards have the most upside.  However, other than the elite top ranked forwards, there is often competition for minutes, as forwards tend to run more hot and cold and only play part of the game. Taking 6 forwards allows you to have more chances to catch one of them on a ceiling week, but if you take a few reliable forwards early then it’s fine to go with 5 since you’ll often use their scores. Many defenders are threats from set pieces to score headers, so building a 5-5-6-2 team with 6 D will give you more chances at that week to week goal variance, as well as an additional shot at a clean sheet bonus. This is a good build to go with if you load up on FW and MD stacks early. There are plenty of viable defenders to take later in the draft, and you can try to stack them with your goalies as well.

When it comes to reaching for stacks, we don’t recommend reaching more than 5-10 spots early on in the draft. If a guy we have ranked highly is falling to you, usually it’s better to grab him than to reach down quite a few spots and work on a stack. We’d rather build the best possible team of players than worry about picking up a goal and an assist at the same time. It is worth building stacks when you can, but don’t go too far out of your way because then you’re weakening your team too much to make it worth it. That said, towards the very end of the draft, the value of those players is not nearly as high. If you want to reach to complete a stack at that point, we think it makes more sense. Like if you have a goalie that doesn’t have a defender pairing, it may be worth reaching down to grab the best available defender on his team (as long as they aren’t ranked like 100 spots down). That’s a good time to reach use your final pick or two in order to complete the stack.
